Why managing BIM data is problematic?
Manufacturers of building materials are increasingly making their products available as BIM objects, which must be distributed to multiple channels simultaneously — BIM marketplaces, websites, catalogs and e-commerce systems. Every BIM object should contain complete, up-to-date and adjusted to given market product information.
Unfortunately, manufacturers usually don't have any automatic way to move product data to BIM libraries in order to nourish them. Most often, this process is based on manual work: data is transmitted in Excel files to modeling companies, which manually supplement BIM objects with them. Libraries prepared in this way are difficult to update, localize to different markets and languages, and maintain their consistency over time.
An additional problem is the lack of a mechanism to inform users about changes. If the manufacturer updates the parameters or certificates, people who previously downloaded the BIM object do not have any signal that the data has changed. As a result, outdated BIM objects which do not reflect the current offer of the manufacturer, are still in use.
Without a central PIM approach for BIM data and automatic synchronization of information, control over the distribution and timeliness of BIM objects quickly gets out of hand.
